Down in the Basement
Beth got me a supa-cool guitar amp for my XMas gift:
'61 Gibsonette GA 8T
A friend was selling off some gear so Andy and I went over there and we each got a cool one. I got a '61 Gibsonette GA 8T, which has tremolo. I've never had such a nice-sounding amp before. It uses a pair of 6BM8 power tubes, a 5Y3 rectifier, and a 12AX7 pre-amp tube. It wasn't working at first, but I swapped in a new set of power tubes and it's been sounding great ever since.
Andy bought a '57 Magnatone Troubadour, famous for it's "true" vibrato circuit.
'57 Magnatone Troubadour
Andy's psyched about his amp, it's his first real piece of vintage gear. He really got lucky, because Magnatones are very desirable and hard to find. I'm a little jealous, but he's such a great player that he really should have that amp. If he stops appreciating it I WILL steal it from him, though.
I also spent some time finishing the distortion pedal I was building. It came out okay and sounds good but I had a hard time stuffing all the parts into the case and it shorts out occasionally. I think I'll pull it apart this weekend and re-do the wiring so things fit better. I gave it a groovy custom paintjob. I'll post some pics later.
